Although there were Kannada remakes of the Tamil Kanchana franchise, the film's third installment was released as a dubbed version in Kannada. Kanchana 3 offers viewers what they expect – a guy who is easily afraid, his bumbling but good-hearted family, a ghost who likes to spook them, tantrums, a nostalgic backstory, and vengeance. Unfortunately, the formula has become somewhat stale by now since this has been done so many times over.
Like its prequels, Kanchana3 also discusses the story of a man named Kaali(Lawrence) and his girlfriend Lucy. While Kaali refuses to join hands with a corrupt politician named Shankar, he and his girlfriend are mercilessly murdered. The rest of the story on how Kaali takes revenge on Shankar by entering Raghava (Lawrence) 's body.
Horror-comedy has become the defining trait of this series, and despite being over the top and chaotic, scenes in recent films have become funnier.
The movie is entirely Lawrence's show as he carries the movie on his shoulders by doing two superb roles. His transformation scenes from Raghava to Kaali have come out well and the success of Lawrence in those scenes has been superb.
In the first half of the film, a few horror-comedy elements will evoke good laughs in the auditorium. A special mention was made about Kovai Sarala, Sriman, and Devadarshini, as their comedy track was hilarious during the interval break. In their brief screen appearance, three girls Vedhika, Oviya, and Nikki Tamboli provided ample glamour performance.
It all seems to feel predictable and boring in this film (there are not one, but five instances of the same jump scare scenario, which shows only a lack of creativity). Conditions tend to be much more infantile in this film as well, and the actors seem to know this and merely cash their checks.
The primary target audience of the film includes children, therefore it is condemnable to objectify the three female leads. Quick every character, including parents of the girls, continues to refer to them as 'figurunga' (a reference to their figures). Any scene with the female leads has a character asking them to sleep with the hero.
Overall, Kanchana3 is a schlocky horror-comedy that has some good elements of horror in the first half. The second part, though, goes down with a long flashback episode and hastened to climax. The movie would get a mixed reaction from the A centers but because it specifically targets the audience, they would like the movie and enjoy it as a bundle.
Even after all this, the film attempts to pass off as one with social responsibility. Previously, the show motivated the oppressed, including transgenders, and with the backstory, the differently-abled. But in this installment, the underprivileged appear to be exploited to boost the image of the star. There were other actors playing sympathetic characters in the previous films but here the star chooses to play the savior himself, which confirms our suspicion.
