Lust Stories [Netflix] Review

The directors come together again after Bombay Talkies with this anthology and deliver a fine watch. The 2-hour watch, broken down into four parts, starts with the tale of Kalindi. Radhika Apte plays with a college professor who is in a long-distance marriage with Mihir, and with her man in an experimental stage.

With Mihir encouraging an open relationship, Kalindi finds herself contemplating the concepts of love, attraction, and so on, as she begins a fling with Tejas (Akash Thosar), one of her students. What follows is how she deals with the people she's drawn to.

Through this part of the plot, Anurag gives us a rather believable picture of open marriages, age differences, and also the 'logic' behind how a woman can be drawn to, or more inclined to, two people at the same time.

We also see how the director connects the story to technology's influence via Kalindi, to whom Radhika gives the best face. The actor is a natural actor and still gives one of her best performances. We laugh and very much relate to her sophisticated yet girl-next-door narratives. The duo of director-actors certainly makes for an intriguing collaboration.

Then we move on to Zoya Akhtar 's film, about Bhumi Pednekar and Neil. In this novel, the director tells a tale of love between a domestic worker and her manager. Zoya presents a very raw screenplay of the relationship between a woman of the lower class and the upper-middle-class man for whom she works. Most of our film takeaways come from Bhumi's endearing performance, which is conveyed through expressions and bare-eyed dialogs.

Zoya manages to capture the essence of the Lust Stories with the very first sex scene. She never tries to paint a pink picture of people's everyday sex life, making us realize what a rare thing this is in Indian movies.

The third part, directed by Dibakar Banerjee, presents the story of Reena (Manisha Koirala) who has an affair with Sudhir (Jaideep Ahlawat), her undervalued husband, Salman's (Sanjay) best friend. What Dibakar does through Lust Stories is not a cliché projection of yet another extramarital affair. The screenplay reveals very easily the emotions of a woman in such a situation, the stupidity of men, and the susceptibility of a person to intimacy and attraction.

Manisha is a pleasure to watch as she plays Reena, a woman who has to keep everything together for no reason whatsoever. We've obviously never looked at the coerced marriage, or the need for another to be treated the way it is, in this novel. Both Manisha Koirala and Jaideep Ahlawat show their versatility with this tale of a very stressful scenario faced by three adults. And Sanjay is a perfect middle man.

Post this, we 're going to Karan Johar 's world. His segment in Lust Stories is not particularly filmy but still has a Karan touch. The last part of the anthology is the story of Megha Verma (Kiara Advani), a young school teacher, her wacky and seductive colleague Rekha, played by Neha Dhupia, and Megha's oddly greedy boyfriend, played by Vicky Kaushal.

The story follows Megha 's journey of dealing with a husband who is at night after night, yet fails to understand the basics of sex and female orgasm. All of this, and more, is rightly highlighted by Karan. This story, too, is bold, outspoken, and has women characters who, despite society's prejudices and taboos, are un-politically self-sufficient.

Neha 's role as Rekha is brutally honest, and her lines are very much what is needed in the genre of cinema that represents everyday people. It's also in the last section where Lust Stories leaves us in fragments and tries to make an impression at the same time.

While we don't want to give away the brilliant scene that shapes Megha 's life, accompanied by Kiara Advani, all we can say is that Karan recreates the famous Ugly Truth scene for this Hindi drama, and that's a defining moment.

Unsatisfactory sex lives, the value of contact during love, arranged relationships, old tabuisms, and much more come to the fore. Lust Tales bring us characters and plots, heart and body things that we've been dreaming about for a long time to come. The anthology has a great cast, and it puts together actors who suit the bill very well. Actors who are etched in our minds like Sudhir, Sudha, Kalindi, and so on.
