'The Sky is Blue,' based on a real story, strikes an emotional cord from the word go. As the lively voiceover of Aisha (Zaira Wasim) takes over from the film's start, we are instantly drawn into the life of Aditi (Priyanka Chopra) and Niren (Farhan Akhtar). A life which turns upside down nearly right after the birth of Aisha.
Watching Aditi and Niren remain optimistic, hopeful, and keep their spirits alive as they go through a grueling period as a middle-class family struggling to collect funds for the care of their child in London is a heart-wrenching step.
Aditi stays for months in London alone at one point, for Aisha 's care while Niren goes back to Delhi to work and be with her other brother, Ishaan. The one phone call, where Ishaan tells his mom who's gone that he's been scolded in class for painting the sky pink and Aditi assuring him the sky can be any color he wants it to, will bring you into tears. And there are a lot of those tender moments in the film that linger.
'The sky is pink' isn't your traditional tear-jerking ride though. The film's plot and dialogs do a strong juggling act by light-heartedly holding some difficult dramatic moments, with a funky contact. The love story of Aditi and Niren brings some really enjoyable moments and so does their overall chemistry as a couple that is essentially the core of the film.
And the times sensitively dealt with lend heft to the traumatic journey the family is going on together. Yet as different facets of the lives of Aisha, Aditi and Niren make their way into the story, the pace slackens, making it a long watch.
In fact, one wishes that the script was more focused and that other parts provided more breathing room and deepened in. The emotional arc and the impressive performances, however, will keep you involved. Priyanka Chopra is remarkable as Aditi, a mother determined to the point that she is obsessed with making her child live the fullest life.
In every scene, her sorrow and suffering are tangible as her character graph stretches two decades. Farhan Akhtar, like Niren, also pulls off a praiseworthy performance as the supportive husband and father whose emotions are not always on display but nevertheless chipping away. His act is amazingly restrained.
Zaira Wasim breathes life into every moment she is on the television, with her lively personality bringing to her character the delicate touch that is so desperately needed. 'The Sky is Pink' is certainly a touching watch as your heart goes out to the Chaudhary family and their zest to celebrate every second, given the difficult times they experience. On the emotional quotient, this one scores high.
