Four More Shots Please: Season 1
Four More Shots Please: Season 1 Review
Four mates, whose lives could not be farther apart from each other, meet quite serendipitously at the pub, and life as they know it comes to an end. The light, the shouting, the sexcapades make comparisons with Veere Di Wedding, and even with Sex And The City unavoidable.
The foursome Marine Drive trips in their stilettos giving off optimistic sex and the city vibe – we've even got a lawyer and a journalist (if not a columnist) – in the mix, but while Veere Di Wedding barely went beyond the cuss word lexicon and gave the popular Bollywood his first sex toy, Four More Shots Please! This definitely digs deeper.
And this is some polish. Anyone who has never been to Mumbai and, through the show, creates a picture of this city would be in a rude shock if they ever land here. The Four More Shots World, yes! It doesn't extend beyond South Bombay, not even to Worli, and the makers have pulled all the stops to make the city look as beautiful as the ladies. And we know it shouldn't have been easy.
Sayani Gupta's fearless journalist and founder, Damini Rizvi Roy, lives in a building called Hamilton House that looks straight out of New York City, probably facing Central Park. More than that, when you walk in. Where are the vast condos?
Kirti Kulhari is great as Anjana Menon, a successful lawyer, a single mother struggling to get over her ex-husband, and be the best mom. If she's distressed trying to be a good mother or uncertain that her ex-husband's fiancé (Amrita Puri) is fast becoming a "sweet aunt" to her four-year-old, or a little contemplative of her sunken love-boat, even as she exuberantly refers to her lady's parts as Ms. Veevee, this actress owns every fold of her character.
And then there's the bisexual Umang (Bani J) who is all about taking life one flirty hook-up at a time until she falls in love with a woman who is not yet ready to leave the closet. Finally, there is the virgin (Manavi Gagroo) who is sexually exploited by her mother to grow slim and meet a worthy marriage bachelor who may or may not have foot fetishists.
Their struggles with an unfair life, jealousy, need for validation and a search for love forms the show's soul, not the Friday night's intoxicated revelry the trailer had advertised.
Obviously, this is the finest act in the series. Her relationship with ex-husband Varun (Neil Bhoopalam) gives the series its most hyper-real moments. Kulhari and Bhoopalam share effortless chemistry, both as recesses lovers and parents.
The wisest decision on the part of the producers was to bring actors such as Neil Bhoopalam and Kirti Kulhari on board. The two are giving the audience a handful of their crudest, frank moments when we see the exes battle with each other. Who will first get over the other, who's going to score the hotter new squeeze, and who's going to love the kid more? There are several contests, and they play well.
Kirti, always a troublemaker in the glossy, sexy, and superficial scenes of routine bar visits, hits it out of the park in moments that involve a genuine and heartfelt feeling. She is believable as the hassled wife who shares her house with a man-baby, relatable as she becomes jealous of the new girlfriend of her ex and breaks your heart like the wailing mother who risks forever losing her child. Kirti is one of the best actors in today 's stock and deserves respect.
One to impress with her performance is Bani, but with a little less accuracy. While she still needs a lesson or two in order to make things more realistic in scenes where she is not the subject, she has added some freshness in scenes that bind her to her roots. A quick phone call with her mother in Punjabi, or a challenge to wear a saree for a prospective husband, added a lot of credibility to the series that was otherwise marred in the newsroom by animated pep talks by Sayani.
While Manavi 's performance was just about acceptable, she asked for a lot of empathy from her character. A woman made to feel constantly ashamed of her body match vibes among strangers. She strips for her webcam, and men swoon across the same curves her mother sees as her biggest curse. Sure, her sexual escapades cause her trouble, but the way she ends up changing her story and relationships made her one of the show's most satisfying moments.
Talking about our lack of satisfaction, the show is heavy on sex but not unnecessarily so. Nobody gets nude at the drop of the hat and the story warrants any hot and heavy scene. The ladies still have sex without removing their underwear, of course, and the bedsheets are still the greatest breast saviors, but these are baby moves in the right direction.
