Mirzapur Season 1 Review

Amazon Prime's third original Made-in-India, Mirzapur (Season 1, 9 Episodes) is a crime drama that never travels beyond the familiar terrain. Its trite narrative framework undermines its ability to be a web response to the Wasseypur Gangs. With little to say, the lines are constantly fluttering.

Lawless Uttar Pradesh boondocks have been destroyed by the Hindi cinema. Mirzapur, produced by Karan Anshuman (who also led the Amazon Prime's Inside Edge) and Puneet Krishna, stroll through the lanes and bylanes of the titular city and dishes more of the same in a regressive style that does all but pushes the medium forward.

This is, to all intents and purposes, a story-telling by-the-numbers that unbridledly wallows in the most hackneyed of gangster-in-a-moral-wasteland genre devices. A formidable cast-Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Ali Fazal, Pankaj Tripathi, Divyendu, Rasika Dugal, Vikrant Massey, Rajesh Tailang, Sheeba Chaddha, Subhrajyoti Barat, Shweta Tripathi and others-is doing its best to give the series the legs to run the distance.

Pankaj Tripathi comes to the performances and has the local Don is fantastic. Whether it's his nuances, mannerism or the way he delivers lines, it's difficult not to be in awe of him. Ali Fazal comes here to surprise. He's all too good as brawn, and no brain. His physical transformation and a fantastic body language.

As usual, Vikrant Massey is realistic and does his role in full justice. Divyendu Sharma plays evil with absolute excellence but in a single-note role. The first time it's good to see him play an extremely negative character and he nails it. So much so, that I also started to empathize with him at one point.

Rasika Dugal sheds on-screen all her nice-good face and shines as a seductor. Shriya Pilgaonkar is first-rate and a strong presence on the phone. Shweta Tripathi is also good, but her time on screen isn't as much as other actors are. It is good that after ages Kulbhushan Kharbanda is seen in a negative role.

Lookout in the final episode for him. None of the main characters in the film are likable on the downside. You are going to find it hard for anyone to root. The main issue was with the character of Vikrant Massey who seemed to be a voice of reason for all but happily when it was killing people.

But no matter how good they are, there's not much they can do to inject life into this dreary, flabby tale of a god-forsaken little town, run by an iron hand by a businessman and mafia kingpin, who has to contend with many rivalries to hang on to his blood-soaked turf. Once Guddu and Bablu first pick up weapons, their mom was pretty cool with it and, in fact, she even encourages them. This was shocking because her character wasn't defined in this way before then.

While we enjoy on-screen blood and gore but in Mirzapur, it was in excess, to the point that it all seems pointless. To give you an example, Sacred Games was quite violent too, but there was no unnecessary level of violence there. For no cause, the degree of brutality in Mirzapur always seemed too much in excess.

Generally speaking, Mirzapur is a very exciting watch and enthralls you from beginning to end. That's when you can sit through the blood and gore excess that is, by the way, too graphical. It's not as good and layered as Sacred Games, but it's captivating, entertaining, and strong on surprise factor.
