Two actors with strong fans of the action genre, Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff, lock horns in Battle. It's a delicious proposition for the lovers and girls of both stars. A kind of millennial throwback to the 90s showdown between Sanjay Dutt and Jackie Shroff in Subhash Ghai's Khalnayak.But aside from this talk-point concept, Fighting, the action-movie buffs represent a lot more. It's got a lot of tricks, thrills, turns, and just enough masala and explosions to hold you occupied in the first half, but until the big surprises happen in the second half of the film, it's awry. Where the film excels in the action set pieces, it really falls short on the plotline.
Yet the plot is totally decent, secondary to the notion of watching two gorgeous hunks squaring in a duel of high-octane stunts (Action Directors — SeaYoung Oh, Parvez Shaikh, Franz Spilhaus and Paul Jennings). It's like the two stars, Hrithik and Tiger, known for their bulging shoulders and their sleek six-packed abs, are out to defeat each other in a battle of sheer brawn.
Kabir and Khalid, hitting, kicking, and beating each other in a heap, and seeing the two actors show off their chisel-like good looks is a sight for the viewers. Hrithik Roshan is in top form as the anti-hero and Tiger match his senior in both the roiling on-screen ferocity and the high-flying action.
Both actors draw on each other's abilities to act in a good-looking way. And when they don't fight for supremacy, they try to out-dance each other in foot-tap numbers. Vaani Kapoor has a small role, much of which she manages to make up the glamorous quotient of the film. Ashutosh Rana always brings his normal dialed-up energy to his results.
Like a quintessential entertainer, War represents a bit of everything in his narrative — action, suspense, songs, romance, exotic places, and car chases. The screenplay makes room for every element of commercial film.
In an effort to make it Hollywood-esque, director Siddharth Anand and his team crafted the many stunts of the film to re-create the thrills that you will normally see in movies like Mission Impossible and Fast And Furious. The implacable action and the baazi dialog are entertaining, but the predictable storytelling and the not-so-original screenplay leave a lot to be desired in this desi action flick.
On the heels of movies like Hrithik's Dhoom 2 and Tiger's Baaghi 2, Fighting is a good addition to both actors' feature action legacy. But at best, this high-profile bang bang series is popcorn fun for action movie lovers.
