Hiphop Tamizha, the musical duo that includes Adhi and Jeeva, is behind the massive success, Meesaya Murukku (Twirl That Moustache). They wrote the plot, script, dialog, and lyrics, composed the music, and directed the film, which makes it a kind of autobiographical tale: this is the story of a boy with music-making aspirations (Adhi) who went to the college of engineering, met with disappointment before meeting a Radio Mirchi RJ who helped a viral video go, and ended up composing for a Vishal starring Sundar C movie.
Clubbula mubbula, the (admittedly catchy) song in the video, which is the hip-hop answer to the hit of the nineties, Senthamizh Naattu Thamizhachiye, a rant against Indian women who do "Western" things like going to bars and having a drink.
It's "Tamil culture," as our films would have us assume, and it aligns in along with Adhi's ferocious "Tamil" image, starting with Subrahmanya Bharathi 's likeness that appears on the band's logo. Adhi was subsequently a part of the jallikattu protests. The group borrowed its name from an apparel company named Tamizhanda Clothing, which sells clothes written in Tamil with slogans and quotations. And then there's the music itself: hip-hop, with Tamil lyrics. Appropriately, Meesaya Murukku features an early scene where Adhi 's father (Vivek) is enrolled in convent school headmaster Adhi confronts. Adhi was hauled up for speaking Tamil in class with his friend. Adhi 's father informs the headmaster, "English is merely a contact device.
He grabs a JK Rowling book from Adhi 's hands at home and gives him a copy of Ponniyin Selvan. (Something simpler for a child?) His signature tic – one that Adhi later picks up – is to twirl his mustache in Bharathi style. He puts up a poet's poster next to Michael Jackson's, thus telegraphing the future of Adhi as a perfect combination of the Tamil verse and a Western form.
Therefore Meesaya Murukku could have been a Tamil-ness celebration. (Even if you don't agree with the sensitivities in Clubbula's mubbula, you can't dismiss the dramatic possibilities in such a storyline.) Or you could focus on Adhi 's music pursuit. He narrates the film and says that life is a journey between failures and successes at the beginning-the plot could have focused on these milestones.
But the film, frustratingly, settles into an uninspired chronicle of college life: ragging, lusting for biriyani (and weeping when curd rice is all there is), cultural activities, and romance (with Nila, played by Aathmika).
Meesaya Murukku has a few scenes, but it is neither a successful romance nor a convincing story of the coming-of-age. It is only after the point of the interval that Adhi takes his music seriously, and the portions of the Nila are clichés to the core. What explains the stunning connection that the film has with the youth? Not that cultural phenomena are logical, but you wonder what you miss when something works in spite of so many negatives.
A youngster might say this movie isn't for forty-something critics, but that doesn't take into account how "young" movies like the exquisitely crafted Premam and Kirik Party work for everyone and also work as a cinema. That may be the thing. A "youth movie" just speaks to the youth. A real film speaks to audiences of every age.
