"Hum aapki khubsoorti ka raaz hai, aapke sarr ka permanent taj hai." This is how Bala opens up on the big screens. An offbeat voice-over (Vijay Raaz) establishes the stage for a great experience at the expense of the hero of the film. He is all 25 but looks much older kudos to his diabetes and bald pate which replaced what was once a dreamy silky hair crop.
His childhood best friend has also left him and for a women's fairness cream, he is demoted at his job. But, not a sobering mix, Bala. Instead, he takes the challenge head on. Bala comes equipped as a stand-up comedian where he imitates Bollywood stars and is actively seeking various remedies for his hair loss.
These range from bizarre to ridiculous where situational comedy offers ample opportunities to be high on fun for the first half, with witty one-liners that will leave you in splits. Ayushmann owns every scene which makes Bala 's plight both believable and hilarious. He uses accurate body language and other nuances to get the Kanpur accent bang on.
You can empathize with him, but even though his chips are down, he never comes off as a pitiful character. All thanks to Niren Bhatt 's smart writing of story, screenplay, and dialogues. Bhumi Pednekar is impressive amongst the actresses as the strong-headed lawyer Latika, who has always faced bias due to her dark skin.
Her makeup doesn't look very convincing, however. Yami Gautam (as Pari Mishra) looks stunning and as Kanpur ki queen, full of herself, is very amazing. Her character reflects the latest trend in social media of small-town influencers and their growing visibility.
Saurabh Shukla, Abhishek Banerjee, Seema Pahwa, and Javed Jaffrey, among the character actors, lend good support and often bring in the laughs. Music from the film mostly plays in the background and mixes well with the narrative. The reference to the various songs from the 90s is endearing.
Director Amar Kaushik is trying to get the message home about how our society mocks people who are different. The film tends to get preaching in the second half, with a repeated hammering of the message about societal prejudices. This takes away the fun quotient of the film but the story keeps engaging the viewer, mostly because of the stellar performance of Ayushmann.
But 'Bala' remains overall a light-hearted sitcom with relatable situations. Just like the message from the film, 'Bala' is beautiful, even with its faults, and never fails to entertain.
