Bharath Kamma's Dear Comrade's opening scenes look like Arjun Reddy's bloopers. Bobby (Vijay Deverakonda) is a stud-cum-rebel hero who scrutinizes all conventional notions of heroism — so literally. He is put into a public toilet as he relieves himself. The corner of his mouth is caught with a cigarette. He is a drunken stagger on his walk.He strikes at us, creating a fight out of thin air as if to rid himself of his hostility. Yet it does hurt. His eyes are damp. In order to make a call, he goes to a phone booth. He smashes the glass walls when it doesn't get through, pulls off the receiver, holds it in his bleeding hand, and tries to make the call ... again.
He doesn't know that the inside of the phone is as dead as he feels. In a short time, Vijay Deverakonda has made the Devadas his own as Temperamental RockstarTM slot, and when you see the catchphrase of the film ("Fight for what you love"), it seems that this "love" is the person (Lilly, played by Rashmika Mandanna) that Bobby made that bloody call to. Red is, after all, the color of a compañero.
But that tagline is a smart diversion. Dear Comrade 's early portions set up the character we know of Vijay Deverakonda — he's in the student's union, and he keeps landing into troubles.
Despite the Che Guevara poster on the wall, the actual ideology doesn't push Bobby particularly. He's really a hot-head. (His professor says he's too reckless.) The plot is about what follows when Bobby stops being a hothead (well, most of all) and grasps the philosophy, the sense of the word "comrade" he's tossed around like a loose change.
It turns out, "Fight for what you love" isn't about Bobby at all. Yeah, he falls for Lilly and at one point loses her, but the "war" is Lilly's, as it unfolds in the second half, and "what she loves" is not just Bobby but cricket. She's a state-level player but something is happening (it's linked to # MeToo) and she's no longer on the squad.
Therefore, Dear Comrade is a very uncommon film. It's a love story on one level — and yet, it's not quite the love story. On the one hand, there is considerable pleasure to spend time with a young, easy-on-the-eyes couple (with Justin Prabhakaran 's easy-on-ears score). Yet this is not all about lookings. See the scene where Bobby leaves the house of Lilly and ties up the stairs to hug her. The quiet look on the face of Vijay suggests a saint, who has found God after a long penance. Of course the director is conscious of the stardom of his star.
Lilly comes along with a lot of insecurity too. There's a tragic event in her past, and it makes you see why she doesn't like it — is scared of the hotheadedness of Bobby. Rashmika Mandanna is a surprise for the film, soft and steep at once. The smallest scenes are so compelling with her too — like when the camera shifts up from her feet as she's about to sleep, and captures her smile of "I'm back with Bobby."
You feel Lilly's sadness when she hands over her cricketing gear to kids in the neighborhood but you don't see it. Initially, she is always in skirts and we gasp along with Bobby when we see her in Indian finery, at the wedding of her sister.
In the end, both Bobby's fight for Lilly and Lilly's fight for justice becomes the "fight for what you love." Dear Comrade contains all the traditional joys of mainstream cinema, such as the brilliantly choreographed sequence of songs during a wedding.
The world and the people around Bobby and Lilly (especially Shruti Ramachandran as the older sister of Lilly, with a very funny bit of history with Bobby) are so warm, so lived-in, so lovable that I'd just be happy to settle for a love story. But the film's utter commitment to its other story impressed me.
