Driven by Anand Kumar's mathematics expertise, who has seen his batch 'Super 30' children year after year at an impressive success rate for IIT admissions, the film portrays his inspiring journey as a fictional story. Anand (Hrithik Roshan), a life speckled with disputes and sufferings, literally rises from the rags to mold his dreams.The story does not touch upon some of the controversies surrounding Anand Kumar that were mentioned in the news, focusing instead on his struggles and magnificence. Son of a postman, a young Anand clinches an entry to the University of Cambridge because of his brilliance in math. Yet if he needs to give up this lifelong chance only because he can not pay the payments, reality strikes him fast, and he loses his head.
But that doesn't last too long, because he is chosen to become a maths teacher for wealthy students in an IIT training center run by him by Lallanji (Aditya Srivastava). But quickly his true appeal and passion reached him and he realized that he had to use his skills to provide a fair chance of life for less privileged, bright students.
He encounters resistance and challenges one after another along the way, of course, but he never loses sight of what he is setting out to do. 'Super 30' brings the idea home that education truly is the luxury of those with connections and economic capital. Unfortunately, it remains a distant hope for others, but if they have the same potential they have in them to shine more brilliantly.
There are many moments in the film that will move you – Anand must literally scrape through after starting his Super 30 classes – with the students often barely having anything to eat. But the true desire they have is for a decent education and a happier future. 'Super 30' has several uplifting and compassionate scenes that touch a chord.
When Anand says "Aapatti se aavishkar ka janm hota hain" at one point, you do believe him, particularly after seeing how motivated his student batch is, leaving behind their deprived lives and literally daring to dream big. But the lengthy run-time of the film begins to weigh on the narrative in the second half.
And some of the plot points come off as far-fetched and too emotional, with certain scenes excessively overshadowed by the background score. However, the movie's cinematography (Anay Goswami) stands out and some of the dialogs hit home.
Hrithik Roshan is pulling off a good performance essaying Anand Kumar, very well reflecting the honesty and commitment of his character. Though others are not completely sure about his physicality, his success does more than makeup for it. Like Anand 's dad, Nandish Singh is sincere and well-cast.
In her limited screen time, Mrunal Thakur is effective. As the unscrupulous politician, Pankaj Tripathi is brilliant and Aditya Srivastava fits his character's villainy to the hilt. Overall, the performances elevate the film. Although the plot has its faults, 'Super 30' is a human drama and a teacher's tale that triumphs over the many obstacles life throw at him, giving the world an example to follow. It is worth a watch just for that.
