Just when we assumed ghost sitcoms were turning monotonous and going out of fashion comes Maragatha Nanayam, an entertaining ghost caper that shows you can still make your movie feel fresh and keep the laughs coming along with some inventive strokes. The script of debutant ARK Saravanan, which switches between fantasy, heist, comedy, action, adventure, and even a little bit of romance, demands kitchen-sink film making, and he's up to the challenge.
The story rotates around cash-strapped Senguttuvan (Adhi), a small-time smuggler who, along with his co-smuggler Ilango (Daniel Pope), attempts to steal the titular Maragadha Nanayam, a legendary artifact belonging to Irumporai 's king whose ghost, it is believed, kills everyone who lays his hand on it.
And on a swami 's guidance, they try to guide them by the spirit of Ilango 's brother, Chidambaram. Circumstances result in the spirit of Chidambaram joining the (dead) body of its boss Nochikuppam Ramadas (Ramadoss).
And Chidambaram calls upon the spirits of Mahendran (Nikki Galrani), Nesamani (Arunraja Kamaraj), and Tamil Ayya (Sangili Murugan), three of his dead friends. The four rank among the Irumporai King's 132 victims. While, a gangster, Twinkle Ramanathan (Anandraj), gets into the mix too!
Maragatha Nanayam takes some time to set up her characters, and initially, her sound changes disturbing, but once the plot kicks in, the movie begins to entertain, beautifully. Director Saravanan also convinces us that he knows what he is doing, and lets us realize that there is a lot of deliberate jumping between genres.
Only the tiny dose of romance we get at the beginning between Senguttuvan and Chanakya (Nikki Galrani) gets a special, comedic twist.
That said, the quirkiness often seems hurried, and even redundant, like the moments that star silly underlings from the Twinkle Ramanathan. The narrative should also have been smoother, as many of the scenes go way too long for having their comedic points. It is also why, given the inclusion of a chase scene involving a monster truck that feels like a nod to Spielberg's Duel, the excitement of a heist/adventure feels amiss.
Even the tiny dose of romance we get between Senguttuvan and Chanakya (Nikki Galrani) gets a rare, comic twist at the beginning.
This being said, the quirkiness also seems rushed, and sometimes repetitive, like the moments the Twinkle Ramanathan star stupidly underlines. The pacing would have been better too, because many of the scenes go way too far for their comic points to make. That is also why the thrill of a heist/adventure feels amiss, despite the addition of a chase scene featuring a monster truck that sounds like a nod to Spielberg's Duel.
