In movies, dynamic, nonlinear storylines are still a tricky proposition. Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam 2, adopts a new script that aims to tell a story that depicts scenarios of the original Vishwaroopam film, both before and after.
So, the sequel provides a continuation of the first film, as well as plot points detailing the scenes of the first movie. This approach results in a long-drawn film that doesn't always sound cohesive. The film is not only indulgent, but it's also just a little bit predictable, considering the smooth production.
Vishwaroopam 2 is an espionage thriller and covers some strong facets of the genre. The action sequences, the stunts, and props all look like their part of a Hollywood big-ticket movie. Yet the film seems too stretched, with all its frills. Many of the dialog-heavy scenes featuring Shekhar Kapur and Anant Mahadevan actually do not make the cut.
There are some flashbacks going back, to Rahul Bose's first film's premise as the Afghan terrorist leader. With the American army and the desert combat sequences, these scenes look great but they don't really add any weight to the story at hand.
There are clumps of action with decent doses of humor, romance and suspense tossed in too, as you'd expect from a typical masala movie. Yet a new sub-plot adds further to the mystery. It also doesn't help the movie go a little too over-the-top with the scene of an underwater battle, as well as the climate-challenging, gravity-defying war.
Kamal Haasan is in good form as the lead man. He 's fantastic in the scenes powered by narration but moments with lots of action and stunts just don't look all that compelling. Pooja Kumar and Andrea Jeremiah have strong roles as the heroines of the film and the two actresses are doing very well. Yet the same can not be said of the villains Rahul Bose and Jaideep Ahlawat who wind up being evil extremist caricatures.
A classic example of overkill is Vishwaroopam 2. This multi-lingual movie was filmed in Tamil as well as in Hindi. And the movie seeks to bring out a bit too much, a little too soon, despite having some genuinely decent moments.
