KV Anand's Kaappaan at first looks like one of those patriotic films often made by Vijayakanth and Arjun in the '90s. The film starts with an alleged assassination of the Indian prime minister, the life of Chandrakanth Varma (Mohanlal, who is made to convey reams of nationalistic dialog that barely strikes a chord), and then we are seeing how Kathir (Suriya), an intelligence officer who doubles up as a peasant, is trying to track down the danger to the PM.But in contrast to the Vijayakant and Arjun movies, which had a single-minded focus even though they tried to have the commercial must-haves of romance, music, and humor, Kaappaan manages to move with less success from one item to the next, resulting in a sometimes disappointing film.
The solution appears to have been: Well, we owe them five minutes of action, let's give them two minutes of romance and then follow up with three minutes of the post.
The script keeps deflating it on purpose, instead of creating suspense! But things go down quickly after the interesting interval block, and the film begins to become predictable, especially as it begins to touch on themes such as farmers' plight and corporate greed that these days almost every third film seems to be talking.
And out of recent films by Mahesh Babu, Bharat Ane Nenu (Abhishek's press conference), and Maharishi (the farming bits), a few elements seem straight out. KV Anand 's films have a certain pulpy texture and even those elements, such as the perspective of biowarfare carried out by locusts, feel underwhelming. As the film hits its futile conclusion, we continue to wish that Vijayakant and Arjun will come and save us.
