In Adithya Varma's opening scene we see an old woman (Leela Samson) speak to her friends about her grandson's obsessed disposition with dignity. This scene provides an insight into why the man he is is Adithya Varma (Dhruv Vikram). His grandmother is only one of the women in his inner circle who, since childhood, have allowed his narcissistic behavior, transforming him into a violent, defiant, possessive, and aggressive young man who can not tolerate rejections.
We are seeing Adithya get frisky with a young woman in his introduction scene. Yet the woman's husband knocks on the door before they can have sex. Though he is saved by the woman who had been a wilful participant until then, in a momentary fit, she is compelled by the angry Adithya to undress at knife-point. Director Gireesaaya designs this scene in a way that serves as a visual metaphor for the electricity that has gone off in the Building.
It's as if the light has gone off inside Adithya 's mind, taking the darkness within him to the surface. But instead, strength returns and Adithya returns to his senses. What follows next, determines the state of his mind. He badly wants to get sexual with a woman, but by putting ice in his crotch he cools down as he knows this may not be possible.
Adithya Varma is the remake of the Telugu film Arjun Reddy (recently re-made in Hindi as well — Kabir Singh) and this opening stretch — which glorifies the actions of the protagonist and attempts to project them as badass and awesome ("unconventional attitude" and "free-spirited" are some of the words that characters use to characterize him in the film) — lets you aware that the criticism that the f f is being attacked Yet luckily, this Tamil film still removes some of the controversial elements of the original correctly, or at least, softens.
The story shifts between these episodes of self-destructive actions of Adithya and the past, where he falls in love at first sight as a house surgeon when he sees Meera (Banita Sandhu), a demure fresher who has entered his Mangalore college. Yet unlike in Arjun Reddy, here, from the very outset, Meera 's motives are plain to us.
While in the original Adithya came across as someone imposing themselves on a hapless girl, here we see that Meera is as interested in him as he is in her. Unlike Shalini Pandey, whose sad eyes made the acquiescence of the character unclear, Banita plays Meera with a shy grin, clearly demonstrating that Meera as much as Adithya is involved in this relationship.
There is strong electricity between her and Dhruv, and in their characters and in this odd relationship, the two young actors make us fall into madness.
Meanwhile, Adithya 's life in the present spirals out of control as he obsesses with the failure of his romance, which has led Meera to be forcibly married by her caste-conscious father (Achyuth Kumar) to another man. Even as he immerses himself in alcohol and narcotics, his family (his elder brother) and friends (his college mate, brilliantly played by Anbu Thasan) unite behind him trying to bring him back to life, but will there be light at the end of this personal suffering?
Given its troubled production, there were doubts as to whether the film might be any good, but with Adithya Varma, Gireesaaya delivers a well-made, if overly faithful, remake. The film is as intense as the original, with a lead performance which suggests we could be witnessing a star's birth.
Dhruv Vikram comes up with a presentation capturing the extreme and raw act of Vijay Deverakonda from the original note to note, but there's confidence and sincerity here that lets us admire it rather than dismissing it as mimicry.
