Yet there's only one 'pest' who doesn't go or pay the rent on time — Baankey. Mirza is the most anguished of all the men who are sick of his go-to reason, "Key Gareeb Hoon."
This 78-year-old abuse-hurling, prank-pulling man harbors only one vision of his whole life, that of being the legitimate owner of the mansion in which he loves and lives dearly. Yet, still, he's exploring strategies to satisfy his unfulfilled ambition.
If all else fails to convince the chakki-selling Baankey to leave after he cracks the local toilet's brick wall, a huffing-puffing Mirza runs off to the police station to resolve the ongoing conflict.
In comes Mr. Gyanesh Mishra (Vijay Raaz), the officer of the Archeological Survey of India (Lucknow Circle).
This conniving bully of a public servant thinks the dilapidated haveli has the capacity to become (or maybe not) a national heritage property and convinces Baankey how this scheme would work well for him and the other tenants. But Mirza is no fool and is swift to launch Christopher Clark (Brijendra Kala), his own hidden weapon.
Clark "speaks English at home" only, and enjoys a collection dedicated to addressing land woes. The house is now personified into mayhem and after one thing or the other everybody is hankering. How is this vast, aging piece of real estate more valuable than those who work there? Shoojit Sircar's 'Gulabo Sitabo' is a social commentary, a satire on mankind's psyche, and how covetousness serves as a guide in your life—it can take you to strange places.
Juhi Chaturvedi (also credited to the dialogs and screenplay) has written an insightful, funny tale with whimsical and funnily dark characters, too. Like one thing, Mirza is motivated by insurmountable ambition and has no qualms about it at all. In reality, the stinginess of Mirza is recognized within Lucknow's length and breadth.
Baankey is a sad, young boy bogged down by family obligations (with a mother and three sisters to care for, who's a handful) and he, too, is trying whatever he can to battle the irritating ways of Mirza. The odd pairing of Mirza and Fatima Begum (Farrukh Jaffar), who are 15 years apart, is another curveball: a marriage with its own quirky backstory.
Director Shoojit Sircar mentioned his new offering as a parody, and the inspiration for the title comes from the two puppets who appear at regular intervals – Gulabo and Sitabo – who seem to be continuously at loggerheads. The film uses metaphors, among other subtexts, for a clear representation of the social difference between dos and don'ts of our culture.
