Misogyny and supremacism are social evils which exist in societies of both the first and third world. Women have always had to play second fiddle in the male-dominant culture, whether you're trained or civilized. Of course, the world will do well to give women even more respect.It is a rare experience to see such an important topic unfold in a horror-comedy like Stree. But when a film that pokes fun at horror film themes and entertains the audience with its quips turns abruptly into a commentary on feminism, it feels a little startling. Stree ends up being a bit too preaching, in an attempt to be socially important.
Mixed, good intentions aside, writing for this genre-bender is very good, particularly in the department of dialogues. Horror comedies are a rare offering in Hindi cinema and Stree offers a lot of thrills and spills in that regard. The setting of a small town and the many jibes at the legends of horror movies are hilarious.
The film's funniest character is Pankaj Tripathi's Rudra, a bookshop owner and Mr. Know-it-all, who guides Vicky and his friends on how to deal with Stree and her haunting act. The comic timing of Tripathi is top-notch and one of the film's veritable highlights. The performance of Rajkummar is likewise good.
Stree does the comedy fairly well, but even with several laugh-out-loud moments, the movie feels a little too long. The film drops the horror comedy treatment toward the end and becomes a bit too serious about the conventional kind of ideas that often play out in horror flicks, stabbing-the-ghost-in-the-heart. It also doesn't add up that a film that aims to promote respect for women, has a song named Kamariya, where men dance around Nora Fatehi's skimpy clad.
Stree is still an entertaining film, in spite of all its flaws and ambiguous ideas. This is an experimental comedy, which creates an eerie atmosphere and at the same time manages to be amusing and frightening.
