Rajnikanth starrer Darbar has become the latest victim of piracy website Tamilrockers. Not for the first time after its release, a Rajinikanth film was leaked. A similar fate met Petta, 2.0, and Kaala, too.

In more recent times the movie pirates have been leaking movies such as Good Newwz, Dabangg 3, Thambi, Hero, Jumanji The Next Level, Ghost Stories, and many others. The platform continues to change its extension and still escapes the sight of lawmakers.

In AR Murugados' Darbar, Rajinikanth is playing Mumbai Police Commissioner Aaditya Arunsalam. Amongst other stuff, Nawab Shah and Yogi Babu play the Nayanthara, Suniel Shetty, Nivetha Thomas, Prateik Babbar.

Justice isn't always delivered in AR Murugadoss films by upholding land law. Whether it's in Ramana or Thuppakki or Kaththi, its protagonists must break the law to ensure that justice is served. So that's what's happening in Darbar, where a wrathful policeman goes on a killing spree to take down a most-wanted suspect.

The director establishes right in the opening scenes that his protagonist Aaditya Arunasalam (Rajinikanth), a top cop committed to Mumbai to counter the city's drug epidemic, is not anyone who goes by the rule book. Arunasalam joins Ajay Malhotra (Prateik Babbar), the son of Vijay Malhotra (Nawab Shah), a top businessman, who happens to be the city 's chief supplier of drugs, during one of his operations.

Yet when Ajay is killed, by threatening Arunasalam and his daughter Valli (Nivetha Thomas), Hari Chopra (Suniel Shetty), a notorious gangster who turned the police force into a laughing stock 27 years ago, returns to the country to resolve what has become a personal score!

In reality, we see him threatening and roughing up the members of the Commission for Human Rights who challenge him about his rule-breaking (the film attempts to portray Arunasalam as a mentally unstable person to excuse his extrajudicial killings).

Following his lead from the Petta of Karthik Subbaraj, Murugadoss transforms Darbar into a celebration of the Superstar Rajinikanth. Though he doesn’t turn this film into a greatest hits collection like the former film, Murugadoss exploits the charisma and superstardom of Rajinikanth and gives us a genre film — a cop film — that is a fairly engaging commercial cocktail of action and drama hemmed by uneven writing.

The best point for the film is the father-daughter scenes between Rajinikanth and Nivetha Thomas whose camaraderie onscreen makes this friendship endearing. Murugadoss also brings us a truly tragic moment and Nivetha Thomas in this section is awesome.

Darbar is also in real life warning to the age of its character. That's why the romantic track is fun, between Arunasalam and Lily (Nayanthara, in a role that is literally a showpiece. It's packed with the signature playfulness of Rajinikanth and Yogi Babu, teaming up with the Superhero as the comedic sidekick, works for the first time.

Just as we marvel at Rajinikanth 's remarkable youthfulness in these portions (a superb job by the departments of cinematography, makeup, and costume), we get a scene where a character remarks on the disparity in age between the two. The dignified way this scene addresses this topic means that people don't take it as an insult to their hero.

Later on, Murugadoss also gets Rajini to comment on his age: "Nambaravanukku vayasu verum number dhaan" ("Age is definitely just a number to one"). And maybe because his villainy is often offscreen, Hari Chopra of Suniel Shetty doesn't come across as a powerful antagonist despite being built up as one.

Yes, he causes multiple deaths, yet the lack of a solid scene of a battle between him and Arunasalam makes it hard for us to buy him as a deadly opponent. That is why the climax sounds meh, instead of giving us a lift. But if this slight frustration is washed away, it is only because of how this character is played by Rajinikanth. Although there is Alex Pandian's cockiness (Murgadoss's inspiration for that character), there's vulnerability as well.
