Angrezi Medium (2020) Movie Review

A heartwarming and hilarious story of the unconditional love between a father and his daughter. A tale of unbreakable friendships and small-town obsessions with the ‘foreign’ dream. Angrezi Medium makes us realize that sometimes people may travel very far in search of answers that were always within them.

Born and brought up in Udaipur (Rajasthan), Champak's life revolves relatively much around his daily quarreling with his other Ghasitaram brother, Gopi (Deepak Dobriyal), and taking care of his only daughter, Tarika, who is all set to graduate high school and head over on another academic voyage.

But, unlike her aunt, she doesn't want to restrict her visions to the place in which she grew up; rather, she wants to discover what lies beyond her small world. Unconscious of what is to come, Champak is giving in to the wishes of his daughter, but things start spiraling out of control when it comes down to paying the heavy fee.

Champak, a committed father, promises to do whatever it takes to send his daughter to study abroad and walks down a path that not only shows his eternal love for his 'betiya,' but also redefines his bonding.

The 'Angrezi Medium' by Homi Adajania taps on the heart of the fascination of the young generation with more research in foreign countries and the resolve of their family to overcome any Himalayan hurdle for their loved ones. There are also other overarching themes, but it remains the film's primary focus.

Considering the fact that Irrfan actually shot this film while getting his treatment. Still, you can put the thinking aside when watching this show. The actor in his role-in any picture-is what you see on the screen. He's really getting you along ... You laugh with him, weep with him and you rejoice with him every time he overcomes an obstacle.

Irrfan breathes life into Champak in a way no other can do. And walking with him shoulder to shoulder is yet another beautiful star, Deepak Dobriyal. His camaraderie with Irrfan testifies to the fact that they are both such polished and well-prepared actors.

As this mildly rebellious and often clueless teenager, Radhika Madan pulls off a fine performance, particularly in the scenes where her movingly beautiful relationship with her father unfolds. Their chemistry is organic, and the representation of their respective characters appears so real that their dilemmas and internal conflicts begin to resonate.

Kiku Sharda, the two brothers' childhood friend, is his normal, amusing self. Ranvir Shorey, who lives the nearly flawless NRI life as Balakrishna 'Bobby' Tripathy, serves as a catalyst in pushing the story forward. The depiction of Bobby comes as a surprising twist in the story, and Shorey is doing the part of full justice.

Kareena Kapoor Khan does well as adds to the confusion in the second half of the film in her brief role as stern cop Naina. Her friendship with her daughter, Mrs. Kohli (played by Dimple Kapadia), is underexplored though. Watching the complexities of their connection play out in the movie must have been fascinating.

All things sweet and small-town are the look and feel of this comedy-drama – the actors consistently carry a thick local accent (though the sounds of Radhika are a bit forced) and close attention has been paid to what we call a 'small-town trait' that beautifully performs in multiple scenes and sequences as the story progresses. The soundtracks and the background score have been chalked out with one foot in the homeland and the other in London, having the two contrasting situations in mind; plays well and differentiates the atmosphere very well.

The first half of the screenplay is more engaging than the second but the story goes quite haywire while trying to fit into too many subplots. There are some brilliant moments in the series, and there are also clearly written scenes between the characters that prove to be the highlights of this drama in turn. The plot, however, is far too convenient and has inconsistencies that are hard to overlook but the outstanding performance of Irrfan makes it worth watching.

On several occasions, 'Angrezi Medium' loses its grip, what it does not lose is its hold on the emotion it attempts to bring out, and the message it leaves you with.
